European financial support for long term professional career integration projects
Deadlines:6th March 2012 AND 18th September 2012

This action consists of financial support for long term professional career integration projects in a host organisation of a Member State or associated country.
The financial support aims to provide the researcher with the best possible conditions for establishing herself/himself in a long term research career. For selected projects, a grant agreement is issued with the integration host organisation, which will commit itself to ensure an effective and lasting professional integration of the researcher for a period of at least the same duration as the project.
The integration host organisation must provide the researcher with an employment contract with a remuneration package of at least the same level to that offered to equivalently qualified researchers at the same institution. Evidence that the researcher will be integrated in the host organisation on this basis for a longer term will be positively taken into account during evaluation. Projects will be selected on the basis of a proposal submitted by an eligible researcher in liaison with a host organisation.

    Researchers' Night 2011

The Researchers' Night is a Europe-wide event bringing together the public at large and researchers once a year on the fourth Friday of September. This year it takes place on 23 September in over 800 venues of 320 European cities in 32 countries.
During the Researchers' Night you will have the chance to discover research facilities that are usually not open to public (laboratories, research centres, museum collections ), to use the most recent technologies and instruments with the guidance of scientists, to participate in experiments, competitions and quizzes, to watch demonstrations and simulations, to exchange ideas and to party with the researchers.

    European Research Council Grants

The film portrays seven young and bright researchers that have received a European Research Council (ERC) Starting grant. This documentary film reveals their personalities uncovering their research universe and ambitions. The research they strive for can be carried out with the financial support of ERC grants. The European Research Council (ERC) is the first European funding body set up to support investigator-driven and excellent frontier research. Every year the ERC selects and supports the very best, truly creative scientists, scholars and engineers, both Europeans and non Europeans, by the means of calls for proposals funded by the Seventh EU Research Framework Programme (FP7). Since its setting up in 2007, the ERC has supported more than 800 research projects, led either by top scientists ("ERC Advanced grants") or by younger, emerging research leaders ("ERC Starting grants").

European Research Council (ERC) starting grant holder wins Nobel physics prize

A recipient of one of the European Research Council’s (ERC) first grants, Konstantin Novoselov, has won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on graphene, a new carbon material that is expected to have widespread application in electronics and photonics.
Novoselov, who was awarded his ERC Starting Grant in 2007, becomes one of the youngest Nobel Prize winners, at the age of 36. The prize was awarded jointly to Novoselov and his fellow Russian Andre Geim, with whom he carried out the research at Manchester University. Geim has been funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for the past ten years, most recently being awarded a £5 million grant in October 2009.

New milestone for ERC project as driverless vehicle reaches China

After a 13,000 kilometre, three month journey through Europe and Asia, unmanned vans powered by green energy and funded by the European Research Council have crossed the Chinese border.
The expedition started on July 20 in Italy, with the goal of reaching the World Expo in Shanghai on 28 October, where a demonstration will take place at the European Union/Belgian Pavilion.
The Intercontinental Autonomous Challenge is part of a research project on autonomous driving funded mainly by the ERC, which aims to improve road safety.
“We have now covered more than two thirds of the route. When it comes to the technology of the vehicles it went smoothly all-in-all,” said lead researcher Alberto Broggi, of Parma University’s Vislab. “We are happy about the test and the great amount of data we are acquiring for further processing at the end of the trip. We had to intervene manually only on limited occasions, for example in the traffic jams of Moscow, when passing a toll station or in case of really adverse weather.”
The convoy, which includes back-up vehicles, has travelled about 6,500 km in 80 days and passed the border between Kazakhstan and China. The rest of the trip will take an estimated 17 days, through varied Chinese landscape, including the Gobi Desert.:
