Hybrid light and heavy duty vehicles

Deadline: 28th august 2014

Specific challenge: The competitiveness of European road vehicle manufacturers is based on technological leadership particularly on system optimisation and affordability, particularly with respect to powertrains. The challenge is to recover a leading position in hybrid technology. The technology will also have positive effect on the reduction of CO2 emissions from road transport and air quality.

Scope: Proposals should develop new knowledge on hybrid components (storage system power electronics, etc.) and system engineering, simulation and technology integration with the aim of achieving hybrid powertrain weight and cost reduction, increased functionality, simplification of complex systems, efficiency and affordability while decreasing emissions and improving performance, comfort and functional safety. For light vehicles, preference would be given to concepts providing significant zero emission ranges. The research should be validated through at least one demonstrator for each platform subject of research.

Project Budget: between EUR 10 to 20 million each

Funding rate: 70% (except for non-profit legal entities, where a rate of 100% applies)

European Centre for Press and Media Freedom

The present call invites proposals that address violations of media freedom and pluralism not only with a theoretical approach but also by providing practical support to journalists.

The proposals should cover in particular the following functions:

• monitor and document violations of media freedom and pluralism, [with a particular focus on impeding or restricting journalistic activities]
• prepare reports of such violations taking account of the need ensure anonymity where appropriate
• raise awareness for violations of media freedom and pluralism, including through organisation of public events and dissemination of information inter alia through a website
• provide a point of contact for journalists [and other professionals from the media sector] who experience or experienced violations of media freedom and pluralism
• explore ways to provide support to journalists facing challenges from such violations and organise support as appropriate
• prepare written documentation of successful approaches towards organising and providing such support
• organise related training

The activities should be anchored in structures that are independent from the Commission and Member States and accessible to journalists and other professionals from the media sector across all types of media. In case where such structures already exist, activities carried out in the framework of those structures which do not fall under the functions described above should not call into doubt the independence of those structures.

The total budget earmarked for the co-financing of projects is estimated at EUR 1.000.000

NGO operating grants for 2014 under the Financial Instrument for the Environment (LIFE+)

This call for proposals aims at co-financing the operating costs of European environmental NGOs in relation to activities provided for in their 2014 annual work programme that involve contributing to the implementation and/or development of EU environmental policy and legislation in Europe.

The main focus of the proposed work programme should relate to one or more of the following thematic objectives:

• protect, conserve and enhance the Union’s natural capital
• turn the Union into a resource-efficient, green and competitive low-carbon economy
• safeguard the Union’s citizens from environment-related pressures and risks to health and wellbeing

In addition, the extent to which proposals address the following annual priorities will be given special consideration:

• Waste
• Climate change mitigation and adaptation

Which kind of Organizations can apply? Organizations independent and non-profit-making, primarily active in the field of environmental protection and enhancement with an environmental objective; organizations active at a European level either singly or in the form of several coordinated associations and which are legally established in one of the EU member states.

Finance available: €9.000.000 ( typical grant award around € 300.000; maximum € 900.000) The rate of overall EU assistance shall not exceed 70 % of the applicant's eligible expenses for the grant year.

Violence linked to harmful practices

Proposals should be related to combating and preventing violence linked to so-called harmful practices (e.g. female genital mutilation, forced or early marriage or forced sexual relationships, honour crimes) committed against women, young people and children.

They must incorporate:

• direct participation of the communities, including targeted awareness-raising, education, specialised training of key professionals;
• promotion of dialogue within practising communities.

Support to activities implemented by NGOs in the field of non-discrimination

DEADLINE: 1 OCTOBER 2013

This call aims to support activities which contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of European and national policies and legislation exclusively in one of the following areas:

• non-discrimination and Roma integration,
• equal rights for persons with disabilities,
• equality between women and men.

The proposal may include activities belonging to the following categories:

• Analytical activities: e.g. studies, surveys, research, policy recommendations, evaluation, data collection, statistics, development of indicators, benchmarks, etc;
• Training activities;
• Mutual learning, exchange of good practices, cooperation;
• Awareness-raising, information and dissemination;
• Organisation of awareness raising campaigns and conferences and meetings aiming at dissemination.

 

The indicative available budget for this call for proposals is:

• for projects in the area of non-discrimination and of Roma integration: EUR 4 300 000;
• for projects in the area of equal rights for persons with disabilities: EUR 2 100 000;
• in the area of equality between women and men: EUR 950 000.

Audiovisual projects on environment

The objective of this call for proposals is to select a proposal to raise awareness of the EU citizens about sustainable development, biodiversity and nature issues by providing financial support to the production of a high quality movie on those subjects for a commercial distribution in cinemas for European audiences, presented by European production companies.

Biodiversity loss and the degradation of nature in the Union have important implications for the environment and are costly for society as a whole, particularly for economic actors in sectors that depend directly on ecosystem services. Biodiversity and nature is vital to countless human activities. Much food production is only possible because of natural benefits like fertile soil and water, and bees that pollinate plants and trees.

 

To that end, the proposed movie subject should relate closely to the thematic priority objective of the Commission’s proposal for a new Environment Action Programme for 2020 “Living well, within the limits of our planet"2 intended to: "Protect, conserve and enhance the Union’s natural capital".

 

The total budget earmarked for the co-financing of the awarded project is estimated at 1.500.000 EUR.

Who can apply? Public or private entities whose main activity is audio-visual production and their Partners. Applicants may act individually or with partner organisations and/or associates.

Framework partnership agreements with EU-level NGOs networks

The purpose of this call is to establish long-term cooperation between the European Commission and European-level networks active in promoting social inclusion and poverty reduction in society as well as European-level networks active in the promotion of access to finance (microfinance or social enterprise finance).

 

The EU level networks organisations play an important role in promoting changes in employment and social policies and legislation. In the current macroeconomic climate in particular, there is the need to re-build the citizens' trust in the European project and to re-gain the support of the grassroots organisations thereby creating the necessary legitimacy for a social Europe.

 

Who can apply: EU Member States, EFTA/EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), and EU candidate countries (Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey).

 

Applicants must choose one of these areas:

• European level networks active in the promotion of social inclusion and poverty reduction .
• European level networks active in the promotion of access to finance (microfinance and social enterprise finance).

 

For 2014 the indicative amount for the specific annual grant agreements will be:

• A total of EUR 10 000 000 altogether for the EU level NGO networks active in the promotion of social inclusion and poverty reduction.
• A total of EUR 1 000 000 altogether for European level networks of organisations active in the promotion of access to finance (microfinance or social enterprise finance).

One Health Programme in Asia

European grant fund: New Knowledge for an integrated management of human activity in the sea

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) promotes the integration of environmental consideration into all relevant policy areas and delivers the environmental pillar of the future maritime policy of the European Union. An ecosystem-based approach to the management of human activities is central to the implementation of MSFD and to attaining its overall objective to take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain good environmental status (GES) by 2020. 

The purpose of this Pilot Project is to develop new concept and decision-making tools for integrated environmental monitoring for the MSFD to support management of human activities in EU marine waters. The project will develop integrated monitoring strategies in selected pilot regions, based on existing sampling across various disciplines (physical, chemical, biological) and scope the potential for joint monitoring programmes (within and between Member States). It will aim to develop strategic approaches to the integrated monitoring of pressures from human activities and their effects on the environment to support the MSFD and other environmental

Multi-annual cooperation projects can be realised in all areas of cultural activity. These projects are intended to enhance the common European cultural area with a view to encouraging the emergence of a sense of European citizenship.

Projects must have a duration of not less than 36 months and not more than 60 months

The only eligible applicants are public or private organisations with legal personality whose main activity is in the cultural field (areas of cultural or creative activity)

Cultural organisations are given support for projects to work together across borders and to create and implement cultural and artistic activities. The thrust of this programme is to help organisations, such as theatres, museums, professional associations, research centers, universities, cultural institutes and public authorities from different countries participating in the Programme to cooperate so that different sectors can work together and extend their cultural and artistic reach across borders.

7 Framework programme: Research for the benefit of SMEs

Activites

1. Research for SMEs scheme

The objective of this scheme is to directly support SMEs in the project to outsource their research activities. The scheme aims at supporting SMEs in need of outsourcing research activities to RTD performers such as universities, research centres or research performing SMEs. 'Other enterprises and end-users', which belong to the same value chains as the participating SMEs, can participate, if it is in the interest of the project.

Projects aim at creating new knowledge or achieving results with a clear exploitation potential to improve or develop new products, processes or services which meet the needs of the participating SMEs.

This scheme can assist SMEs in acquiring technological know-how and accessing international networks for their medium to long-term business development and follow a bottom-up approach, meaning that the research can originate in the entire field of science and technology in all industrial sectors.

 

2. Research for SME Associations scheme

The objective of this scheme is to indirectly support SMEs through their associations /groupings to outsource research activities. This scheme targets SME associations which act on behalf of their members to identify and address common technological problems and to promote the effective dissemination and take-up of research results. Projects include research, technological development and demonstration activities and are encouraged to include other activities such as training, to facilitate the dissemination and exploitation of results.

 

3. Demonstration activity

The objective of this activity is to prove (demonstrate) the viability of a new solution (itself a successful outcome of a research project) that offers a potential economic advantage but which cannot be directly commercialised as further technological or other developments are required. SMEs often need to follow up research projects with work linked to ‘demonstration’ or production of prototypes before actually commercialising goods and services but funding for this kind of activity is not readily available. Activities could e.g. include testing of prototypes, scale-up studies, performance verification and implementation of new technological and non-technological solutions. This action could also include detailed market studies and business plans. There are no thematic restrictions.

 

4.Coordination and Support Action - supporting action

The Commission, in its proposal for the SME support in the forthcoming programme Horizon 2020, has put strong emphasis on the development of a direct face-to-face mentoring and coaching support to SMEs desiring to innovate.

Eligible actions

Support for training: this action aims at strengthening the skills of European and third- country professionals:

-Option 1 supports the inclusion of students/professionals and teachers from non-EU countries in initial or continuous training schemes supported by the MEDIA 2007 programme ,

- Option 2 supports the creation of a continuous training scheme specific to MEDIA Mundus.

Support for market access: this action supports projects to promote access to international markets for audiovisual works. These projects concern the development and/or pre-production phases (for example international co-production markets) and activities downstream (events facilitating international sales of the works).

Support for distribution and circulation: this action aims at encouraging distribution, promotion, screening and diffusion of European works in third-country markets and of audiovisual works from third countries in Europe under optimum conditions.

Cross-over activities: this action aims at supporting projects of a cross-cutting nature, i.e. touching upon several priorities of this programme, e.g. trainings with subsequent pitching events at co- production meetings.
